Friends for LifeThey say all you really need in life is one good friend. I’m
lucky that way. I have Rachel. Rachel’s a recovering alcoholic. I’m a
recovering codependent. She makes me laugh. And cry. And think. All of which I
needed recently.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
From girl to woman: ‘I couldn’t count on myself. I couldn’t
count on my emotions’ At 28, Holly is a cute
blond who most people would never guess was once a serious drug addict. But
until last year, when it came to drugs and alcohol, Holly was an omnivore. She
did everything that came her way; as a result of her drug use, she has
hepatitis C. more »

SPOTLIGHT ON...Books and films about getting — and staying — sober by Thom Forbes
When I wanted to get sober more than 20 years ago, I found
inspiration in “The Courage
to Change” (Houghton Mifflin), a collection of conversations author
Dennis Wholey conducted about alcoholism with a few dozen famous reformed
drunks, including singer Grace Slick, writer Elmore Leonard, and a few guys I
admired who threw baseballs 90 miles an hour. more »

SPOTLIGHT ON...The Art of Lament By Connie B.
During my early years of Twelve Step recovery, a wise and
wonderful sponsor listened patiently to my frustration over a recurring problem
which I thought I had already turned over to God. She reassured me that, yes,
we had talked about this issue before and, yes, I had indeed already
surrendered the matter… several times, in fact.

SPOTLIGHT ON… FAMILIES and FRIENDSNot My Job By Julie W.
I learned to try and control the addicts and alcoholics in our family from my mother. She screamed, spied, plotted, worried, and obsessed. After I married and had children, I figured if I became a Perfect Mother my children wouldn’t have trouble with drugs or alcohol. I spoke softly, made cookies, and tucked cheery notes inside their lunch boxes. more »

SPOTLIGHT ON…Helping and Being Helped in Sobriety‘Call Don’ By joesteelhead I come from a “Father Knows Best” type of family, and the alcohol abuse was very subtle in my house. The folks would buy a bottle of bourbon around Xmas and 2/3 of that bottle would still be there the next Xmas. But somehow my two older brothers and I all became abusers of alcohol and chemicals. more »

Breaking the CycleBy Deborah L. My life was filled with dead-end relationships. Seemed every
guy I dated had problems with drugs or alcohol. A little voice inside me always
told me my bulimia was no different and was probably what attracted these
addicts to my life, but I never listened. It was easier just to leave the
relationship than to leave my bulimic lifestyle of 25 years.

When Gratitude Outweighs the RegretBy GaryB1
I first drank alcohol at a late age—16—and like many of us, I fell in love.
I had already spent two years in a juvenile institution at this point due to my “incorrigibility” at home. I didn’t see then that the state knew my alcoholism well in advance and had quite a few geographical changes planned for my future. By the time I turned 35, nearly half of my life had been spent behind bars. more »
